Work package 2: Evaluating maritime industry processes and technology outlook

Maritime industry processes in the Baltic Sea Region – Synthesis of eco-inefficiencies and the potential of digital technologies for solving them

This synthesis was developed under ECOPRODIGI’s Work Package 2 ‘Evaluating maritime industry processes and technology outlook’. It offers an overview of
the results achieved so far in the project’s three technology cases: digital performance monitoring, optimising cargo stowage and optimising shipyard processes. The report summarises the eco-inefficiencies identified in the processes of the involved end-users, and it introduces the digital technologies that are currently in use and the most promising digital technologies and concepts for improving eco-efficiency. The report also addresses challenges and requirements that the implementation of new technologies and concepts involves. On that basis, the report provides an outlook for the future in regard to capitalising the benefits of digitalisation. The focus is on the Baltic Sea region, but the scope is global, as the solutions may be utilised anywhere.

Work package 3: Solving eco-efficiency bottlenecks through digital solutions

Trim and Ballast Optimisation for a Tanker Based on Machine Learning – Big data Analysis of Existing Data for Improved Environmental Performance and Ship Efficiency

The purpose of this study has been to demonstrate how value for business as well as for emission control can be created from auto-logging of high frequency operational data from ships. The aim has been to test machine learning and big data approaches based on existing historical ship operation data to improve energy efficiency on ballast trips. Based on the analysis, guidelines for how to improve energy efficiency of ships can be made by data collected from real-time operational data.

Guidelines for 3D Documentation of Ship Block Geometry – A Process Description

This guideline document introduces the necessary measurement technologies and presents a workflow for how shipyards can implement 3D documentation technology to create a digital value stream supplementing the existing physical value stream. It acts as a guide for shipyards wanting to utilise spatial digitalisation by detailing the methods and requirements for the implementation of 3D measurements of ship blocks in the manufacturing and assembly phase. Using the methods and tools in this document allows the manufacturing shipyard to collect and process 3D measurement data of the block in a quality assured and efficient manner. The guideline also details how this data should be formatted and shared with the downstream recipient, the customer shipyard, where it can be used for quality assessment and digital planning and verification of subsequent manufacturing stages.

Synthesis of Digital Technology Pilotings – storymaps and videos

The synthesis work on ECOPRODIGI’s three industry cases on digital performance monitoring, optimising cargo stowage and streamlining shipyard processes compiles the findings from the digital technology pilotings. Based on the findings, the synthesis provides information on the processes, best practices, challenges and opportunities in implementing digital solutions in maritime industry. The synthesis outputs are available as storymaps and videos.

Work package 4: Improving seedbed for eco-efficient digital solutions

Digitalisation roadmaps for maritime industry

Digitalisation roadmaps have been produced as part of ECOPRODIGI’s work package 4. They provide a glimpse of the future of maritime operations in the Baltic Sea region with a focus on Ro-Ro shipping and shipyard operations. The roadmaps are a product of inter-disciplinary collaboration, the core of which consisted of ECOPRODIGI consortium members. Early drafts were validated through consultation with experts, and results were summarised and validated together with wider industry and policy actors through surveys.

Training for shipyard ecosystems – Pilot training results

Training for shipyard ecosystems is a continuation of the work done in ECOPRODIGI’s technology case focusing on the optimisation of shipbuilding processes at shipyards. The aim has been to provide concrete answers to shipyards and their suppliers on how to train and educate their personnel on the possibilities and best practices of utilising digital tools and solutions in yard process optimisation. The report on the training results provides concrete advice and knowledge on training possibilities for shipyards and their suppliers.

Providing training for shipping and ports activities in the Baltic Sea region

The training program for shipping companies and ports has been developed to enable RO-RO shipping companies, RO-RO terminals, and clients to achieve eco-efficiency benefits such as fuel savings, improved RO-RO vessel utilisation and reduced waiting times for clients. The focus has been on enabling the integration of IT systems, developing and testing advanced RO-RO cargo stowage or load planning tools, and facilitating the design of more efficient new work procedures on terminals / ships in collaboration with relevant staff and without compromising safety requirements.

Policy briefs

To strengthen public support for maritime industry digitalisation and eco-efficiency in the Baltic Sea region, ECOPRODIGI has produced policy briefings based on the findings from the projects three industry cases. The briefs include insights into the key findings of each case as well as practical recommendations on how to support and strengthen digitalisation and eco-efficiency in the areas of vessel performance monitoring, cargo stowage, and shipyard processes. The briefings will be compiled into a policy agenda.

The policy agenda ties together findings from ECOPRODIGI’s industry cases in vessel performance monitoring, cargo stowage, and shipyard processes, as well as the policy briefs that are based on the cases. The agenda features practical recommendations on what policy makers and maritime authorities can do to support and strengthen digitalisation and eco-efficiency of Baltic Sea region’s maritime industry.
